Cheshire Phoenix Crowned BBL Champions 2018
The Cheshire Phoenix basketball team join the clubs after a 99-88 BBL Cup win on 28th January.
The capacity crowd of 10,000 at the Arena Birmingham were treated to a thrilling spectacle as Worcester Wolves and Cheshire Phoenix battled it out for the silverware in the final. Ultimately drive and determination resulted in the Nix being crowned Cup winners for the first time in the Club’s history, joining the winning elite at the top of their game.
Coach, Ben Thomas, as featured in the Chester Chronicle said:
“I am absolutely made up for the Cheshire Phoenix organisation first and foremost. Our fans are some of the best in the country. They have stuck with us after ups and downs but from the start of this season, they have always had our backs.”
The first 10 minutes began shakily for the Nix as the Wolves landed quick points in succession, pulling ahead quickly and decisively. This was not to last as Nix dug deep to respond in defence closing the gap then nudging ahead. The next two quarters that followed must surely go down in the memory as some of the most exciting points won and lost in a British Basketball showdown.
In the second half Nix demonstrated a tenacity in defence, throwing the Wolves out of sync and giving them no room to land points. The last quarter secured victory for Nix; they remained aggressive in defence and continued using their creative flair to create opportunities to score and build on their lead. In response to the intensity of the game, Nix captain Orlan Jackman said:
“Thank you to Worcester for pushing us to the absolute limit. It was a very intense. We locked in on defense and the guys were just solid.”
Malcolm Riley’s 26 points earned him a well-deserved MVP (Most Valuable Player), mentioned in BBC Sport:
“We fought back in Newcastle and then we came down and beat the odds in London so for us to get here we had nothing to lose and everything to gain.”
Riley was closely followed by CJ Gettys on 19 points and the team acknowledged the fans for giving the team ‘fan power’ helping lift them to victory. Coach Thomas said:
“They are always loud and proud. Every single player gave 100% on the court and when you do that, this is the result that you get.”
