Despite earlier comments suggesting that the Prime Minister believed the next General Election should be in 2020, Theresa May has today announced plans to call a snap election on 8 June.

May has explained this decision with reference to the need for “certainty and security”, along with strong leadership in the years to come.

In order to hold a vote before 2020, May will need Parliament’s backing. A Commons vote will take place on the matter on Wednesday 19th April.
